Open Group's Public License for Motif
The Open Group have announced the release of the source code of Motif to the Open Source community.
- In making the announcement, Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group, said
- "As the graphical user interface toolkit of choice on UNIX systems, Motif is
the most successful
technology available today for heterogeneous platforms. We want to support the momentum
of Open Source operating systems such as Linux and FreeBSD, and have developed an
Open
Motif licence for use with Open Source operating systems.
- This license allows the release of the Motif source code for use, reproduction
and distribution on operating systems that are themselves Open Source programs, such
as Linux and FreeBSD, without the payment of royalties."
IST was contracted by The Open Group to prepare the source code of Motif for release as Open Motif.
IST brings more than ten years of engineering experience of the X Window System and Motif
to bear on supporting graphical application building on UNIX and other X platforms through
the use of X-Designer, the leading Motif GUI builder.
The classic "how to" work on programming Motif 1.2, Advanced Motif Programming
Techniques, was written by two IST personnel. More recently, the latest version (February 2000)
of the standard work on Motif, O'Reilly Volume 6B,
Motif Reference Manual for Motif 2.1, was written by Antony Fountain, a Principal Software
Engineer with IST.
