Open Motif Released

LINUX AND FREEBSD OPEN MOTIF DISTRIBUTIONS RELEASED BY IMPERIAL SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY

Imperial Software Technology Appointed by The Open Group to Prepare Motif Source for Public Licensing

Palo Alto, California, May 17, 2000 - Imperial Software Technology (IST) today announced that it has released distributions of Open Motif® for Linux® and FreeBSD. The Open Motif distribution is available for use, reproduction and distribution on these Open Source operating systems without payment of royalties. IST was contracted by The Open Group to prepare the source code of Motif for release as Open Motif.
"As the creators of X-Designer®, the world's leading Motif GUI builder, we're delighted to have assisted The Open Group in preparing Open Motif for release,"
said Derek Lambert, CEO of Imperial Software Technology.
"The advent of Open Motif extends the reach of standards-based, professional user interface technology to the new free operating system platforms which will materially assist in the acceptance of Linux and FreeBSD in the corporate networked application environment."

"As the graphical user interface toolkit of choice on UNIX® systems, Motif is the most successful technology available today for heterogeneous platforms,"

said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group.
"We want to support the momentum of Open Source operating systems such as Linux® and FreeBSD by developing an Open Motif® licence for use with Open Source operating systems."

IST brings more than ten years of engineering experience of the X Window System and Motif to bear on supporting graphical application building on UNIX and other X platforms through the development of X-Designer, the leading Motif GUI builder. The classic "how to" work on programming Motif 1.2, Advanced Motif Programming Techniques, was written by two IST personnel. More recently, the latest version (February 2000) of the standard work on Motif, O'Reilly Volume 6B, Motif Reference Manual for Motif 2.1, was written by Antony Fountain, a Principal Software Engineer with IST.

Open Motif is free of charge to use on operating system platforms that are themselves free, such as Linux and FreedBSD. The binary distributions for Red Hat Linux 6.1 and FreeBSD 3.4 are available for download now from IST's Motif page.
