IST's Motif Accessibility Solution provides full Section
508 compliance for your application without the addition of
any other technology. By using the
Application Inspector,
your application is a fully customized accessible application
within minutes.
IST's Motif Accessibility Solution works by attaching
itself to a running Motif application and making the user
interface programmatically accessible. An invisible process,
the MAM (Motif Accessibility Module), accesses the current
focus widget in your application and sets the resources you
have chosen for it. You can specify the following
enhancements for the widgets in your application:
- Change of font. Select any font with any style.
- Font size. A specific size can be set or you can ask for the font to be made a percentage larger or smaller.
- Foreground and background color. Choose any colors or ask for a specified percentage darker or brighter.
- Tooltips. These are added automatically by the Motif Accessibility Module - simply type in the text you wish to display.
- Display style for tooltips. Choose the font, foreground and background colors in which to display the tooltips.
- Keyboard options. Alter the multi-click rate, the key click volume and the bell volume.
- Navigation. Add accelerators and mnemonics to aid use of the application from the keyboard. Tab options allow you to move more easily around a user interface. This applies to all widgets, not just the current focus.
- Images. A separate image magnification window enlarges any image on a widget with the current focus.
- Cursors. These can be colored and enlarged, as required.
- Miscellaneous information. This includes long and short descriptions and audio filenames.
This is an instant solution without the need for special
toolkits to be added to Motif and without any additional
programming. It is non-invasive and invisible and, using just
this configuration, you can enhance the appearance of the
application on-screen and extend its behavior to allow for
easier keyboard navigation. This is achieved by setting X
resources which are written automatically by the Application
Inspector.
IST's Motif Accessibility Module (MAM) is the heart of the
Motif Accessibility Solution. The MAM runs alongside a Motif
application, interrogating the widgets in the application's
user interface and setting properties using X resources. It
provides a channel of communication between your application
and external devices such as the desktop, keyboard, mouse and
assistive technologies. The MAM is a runtime application, it
does not need to be compiled in with the client application.
