Important notes about Visaj and JDK versions

Visaj 3.0

Visaj 3.0 will run on any platform that supports The Java 2 Platform. i.e. it will run under J2SE 1.2 and above, in particular J2SE 1.4 and Java 5. Visaj 3.0 supports the latest swing features of J2SE 1.4.

Note: There was a problem with running Visaj with Java JDK 1.5Beta. However this problem does not occur when running Visaj with the 'final' release of Java 5 (JDK 1.5).

Visaj 2.*

Visaj 2.1 and later releases of Visaj 2 will run on any system which supports the Java Development Kit (JDK). Visaj has been developed and tested using JDK 1.1.6 and also tested against earlier versions of the JDK. You should not run Visaj with JDK versions earlier than JDK 1.1.3, and we strongly recommend using JDK 1.1.4 or later. Visaj 2.1 and later will run on JDK 1.2beta4, JDK 1.2 RC1 and JDK 1.2 RC2. Although it will also run with JDK 1.2beta3 we do not recommend this.

There are known problems when running Visaj 2.* on J2SE 1.4. You are advised to upgrade to Visaj 3 if you want to use J2SE 1.4.

We recommend the following configurations when using Visaj 2:

Windows JDK 1.1.4 or higher There can be some minor problems if the HotSpot VM is used (available with JDK 1.2.2 and JDK 1.3). Because of this we recommend not using the HotSpot VM on Windows platforms. The HotSpot VM can be turned off by putting a "--classic" flag in the shortcut for the Visaj launcher.
Solaris JDK 1.1.4 or higher There have been some problems with the internal version of JDK which is shipped with Solaris 2.6, equivalent to JDK 1.1.3. We advise against using this JDK.
AIX Latest possible Early versions of the JDK exhibited problematic behaviour
HP-UX Latest possible Early versions of the JDK exhibited problematic behaviour
Linux Latest possible See Linux Notes below
Macintosh MRJ2.1 You should use the latest. Early versions of MRJ 2.1 have a number of problems which prevent Visaj from running properly.
MRJ 2.1.1 (JDK 1.1.7) will work with Visaj 2.1.1.
See also the Troubleshooting guide when using MRJ 2.2 or later

Visaj 2.1 and later support the built-in version of Swing which comes with JDK 1.2beta4 or later, as well as the stand-alone version of Swing. Visaj will detect that you are using JDK 1.2beta4 or later and load the appropriate palette to suit the API.

If you wish to use a version of Swing with a different API, please contact support@ist.co.uk and they will advise you.

Notes for Linux users

There is a bug in both the Blackdown and Inprise versions of JDK 1.2.2 involving the setting of labels on MenuItems.

The problem occurs when "MenuItem.setLabel" is used, this in turn causes MMenuItemPeer to call "MenuItem.getShortCut()" which is NULL by default, and then goes on to call "toString()" on the returned value (NULL) - hence a NullPointerException (this should be visible in the visaj.log file).

You should be able to find this issue documented at: http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4234266.html

To fix the problem copy the tar archive visaj_linux_patch.tar to the root of your Visaj installation, extract it with 'tar xf' and then restart Visaj.

Notes for Macintosh users

You should read the Readme_first file (with the distribution) before installing the Macintosh version of Visaj.
For the Macintosh the Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) v2.1 is required to run Visaj - see below. This may be downloaded from: http://www.apple.com/java/

When Merging Palettes, Java classes need to be placed on the CLASSPATH. To place Java classes onto the CLASSPATH on the Macintosh, copy your .class and .jar files into the folder named:
System Folder:Extensions:MRJ Libraries:MRJClasses
